List-Unsubscribe is a message header that provides a standardized, machine-readable way for recipients to opt out of future mail. When present, mailbox providers can display a prominent unsubscribe link or button at the top of the message, separate from whatever link you place in the body, making opt-out effortless.
The header can offer two methods: a mailto address and an HTTPS URL. The newer List-Unsubscribe-Post header enables true one-click unsubscribe, where a single tap sends an automated request that removes the recipient without them having to visit a landing page or confirm — a requirement now enforced by Gmail and Yahoo for bulk senders.
Adding List-Unsubscribe is both a compliance measure and a reputation protector. Providing an easy opt-out reduces the far more damaging alternative: recipients marking your mail as spam. A spam complaint hurts your sender reputation much more than an unsubscribe does, so the header actively defends your deliverability.
As of the 2024 bulk-sender requirements, one-click List-Unsubscribe is effectively mandatory for anyone sending significant volume to Gmail and Yahoo. Senders must implement it, process the resulting opt-outs within a couple of days, and never send to those addresses again. Honoring it promptly is both legally prudent and essential for staying in the inbox.
